Colonoscopy without Sedation

Felt compelled to write, having just had a colonoscopy. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not worry about the procedure. The Moviprep was not much fun and the first does made me feel very sick, almost to the point where I didn't think I could do the second dose. However, the second dose was much better and I didn't feel so sick.

The thought of the procedure was far worse than the reality. I decided against sedation and I am so pleased that I did, it was uncomfortable for about 3 seconds twice and gas and air was perfect. I appreciate that everyone is different, but I really don't think sedation is needed. The pain was less than wind and really nothing to be concerned about.

I hope this helps anyone worrying or researching colonoscopy without Sedation. It was fine and very little pain at all. Relax and you will be fine.

Take care,

Michael

  • So glad to hear all went okay I am absolutely gutted I opted for sedation, they recommend I did because I had high blood pressure and was nervous, but it was so much worse they was so ruff with me I couldn't believe it I was in so much pain more than wind, I was watching on screen trying to embrace Thinking it was really interesting. But I defiantly think you went for the better option, i had mine on Saturday and I am experiencing a lot of side pain and blood. I'm hoping this is a normal side effect.

  • I recently had a cervical biopsy wasn't offered anything was in so much pain went after about 6 days but will take 4-6 weeks for cervix to heal . Did u get your results ? What was ur symptoms.

  • hi.  I just had a colonoscopy without sedation.  If you are in any doubt, I would take the sedation.

I am so pleased it's behind me - discomfort (though not too much pain), and I became very anxious.

Appreciate everyone is different - both in the shape of their insides and in their mental state.  This is purely my experience.

Writing this in case it helps others - while you can do without, if you're in two minds, take the sedation.
