CIN3 second time

Hi, I am wondering if there is anyone that has been through the same as me or a similar experience?

I had some abnormal bleeding irregular periods and so went to GP who referred me for colposcopy and then I decided to have my smear test which I wasn't going to ! Silly girl! Luckily I did and it came back as CIN 1 and HPV positive, I was upset but then come to realise it's one of those things I'll just need to be seen and get rid.

went to colposcopy a few weeks later , had the cells removed and the biopsy result showed no cancer but did show CIN3 and that I should attend 6 monthly smears.

I then had a 6 month smear test and the results came back to say HPV positive and CIN3 ( high grade severe cell change) of which was a shock as I expected it to be clear !

anyway within a week I had another colposcopy appointment which was yesterday. She wasn't even aware it was the 2nd abnormal cells within 6 months I had to tell her which I found quite poor, well anyway they did a LLetz treatment and said it's not cancer it's pre cancer which is fine but surely the LLetz biopsy will be confirming that. She is writing to me in 4 weeks once results are back, I have mild PCOS which can cause abnormal bleeding and I sometimes have bleeding after sex but not always. So some symptoms and some pain discomfort as well to be honest but I put that down to something else. The scan on ovaries showed no tumours so that's that.

I also had a blood test which I think was fine I can't actually remember! I should probably ask about that.

She said I fall into the small bracket of people that the cells have come back and the one treatment is normally ok and clears the cells. And that sometimes they might need to do a different area around vagina walls I didn't really understand and said they'd mention it in monthly meeting with other consultants which I found strange as well. she did say that it is unlikely to affect my fertility as I was thinking of having children now just in case I needed a hysterectomy but I know that's a long way away BUT I have no children so it's a worry for me.

anyone had similar ???

thanks xx

  • Hi

I haven’t been in the same position but know many ladies who have been, due to my own history. The cells removed during your treatment will be examined to confirm the CIN3 diagnosis, and it is common practice for results to go to a multidisciplinary team meeting (which I suspect is what they mean here). This is so that the results can be reviewed and any necessary next steps planned.

CIN3 is pre cancerous cells and these can appear in different areas around the cervix, which is why another treatment may be necessary is some cases, if not all of the abnormalities have been removed. It should not affect fertility, and I know many ladies who have had multiple treatments and gone on to have successful pregnancies. A hysterectomy would indeed be a long way off-other much less invasive treatments are done before this would even be considered as an option. Hopefully you will have results back soon and will find out what will happen next. Good luck! x
