Can they determine cancer from ultra sound

Hi,

im a 34 yr old mum of 3. I have been having some abdominal pain and bloating for around a yr. my doctors thought it could be a gynae issue and sent me for diagnostics. Yesterday I had an abdominal scan at 10.30 and at 1pm my doctor called to discuss. They have unexpectedly found two large masses on my liver. She said it has been reported as cancer and there is a serious worry that this is not the primary source.
How can they tell from an ultrasound it's cancer and how do they know it's not the primary source? I have another face to face app on Tuesday but I have so many questions now. she said I need a CT in a couple of days.

  • Hello RoxyD

I'm sorry to hear about the news that your GP gave you yesterday. It's obviously a very difficult time for you and I didn't want to read your post and not reply as it sounds as if you could really benefit from chatting to someone at the moment.

Unfortunately, our team of nurses are now not back in the office until Tuesday but I do believe the Macmillan Support line is open over the weekend. You can find information here

If you want to chat with our team of nurses they're back in the office after the bank holiday on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).

I know this will be a really difficult few days ahead with much uncertainty and anxiety. Try to keep busy and please avoid using Google to look for information as it will leave you feeling more worried. You're welcome to post here at any point if it helps to have somewhere safe to offload and I'm sure the community will do their best to support you.

Keep in touch RoxyD and let us know how you get on at the appointment on Tuesday.

    Best wishes,
