Worried about referral

Hi everyone,

For the past couple years I've been having pretty rough migraines, and was told it was most likely something that would go away over time. Recently (in the past 5 weeks or so) I had another episode of these headaches, with added fatigue, nausea, vision problems, muscle weakness, etc. and so I ended up going to the walk in centre (only in the area briefly before going back to university - I went in assuming it would be chronic fatigue or something pretty mundane but I ended up being sent to hospital and admitted for a lumbar puncture and CT scan. According to the hospital everything came back pretty clear (except I had some high pressure in my head) and so I put it down to stress and tried to carry on as much as I could.

After I was discharged I had an outpatients MRI and MRA, but also made an appointment with my GP to discuss some other things that came up (I had some odd blood results so thought it was best to check up). As time has gone on the pain has continually gotten worse (to the point where my legs went completely numb and I'm in tears every day), and after doing some more blood work with my GP I had similar odd results - one thing the doctor brought up was that I had a high platelet count but I thought that it could be something to do with my swollen lymph nodes??

While talking to my GP she also mentioned that my MRI results were on the system but didn't give the test to me, and followed up by saying that I would receive a call from a hospital consultant in the next few days - after searching this doctor I have found out he specialises in endocrinology, and so I'm a bit worried that that results of my MRI aren't going to be good.

I know that all of my other test results were pretty much fine other than a few odd things here and there, and I would've thought that anything sinister would be picked up on a CT scan, but I just have a gut feeling that something is wrong. Looking at the nature of my symptoms, they would fit with something like a tumour on the pituitary gland (but I am aware to not trust online information), and the fact that the doctor is focused in endocrinology also doesn't give me hope.

I'm trying to stay positive as I believe that this is absolutely nothing and I'm just freaking out, but Iwas wondering if anyone was in a similar situation and could give me some advice or share their experience? I only just turned 19 in March so the whole thing is very daunting to me (especially put together with COVID) and so I would appreciate it so much.

Best,

M

  • Hi MB00,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of your worries and I know this uncertainty is always difficult.

It sounds like you've had quite a few tests so hopefully you're not far away now from getting all the information you need.

Do try to avoid Googling any symptoms as it is often unhelpful and only tends to increase worries.

I hope it's not too long to wait for the phone appointment and do use that as an opportunity to talk through any questions you have.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
