My mum has got a swollen supraclavicular fossa/collarbone

Hello. I'm looking for some advice please as my mum has got a soft swollen patch between her shoulder blade and base of her neck, on the left side, there is no lump there just a soft fatty patch, which I've googled and is called the supraclavicular fossa, I have also googled reasons for this and all I'm reading is cancer?! I'm freaking out as I have massive anxiety anyway and this has sent me over the edge.

She has been to the doctors today who have said they are slightly concerned as she is showing no signs of infection so they have referred her for a load of blood tests and a scan. The doctors has also ruled out it being a lipoma.

Please can anyone who has had something like this please reach out to me with any advice or their experience please, wether it's good or bad I'd like to hear.

Just a side not my mum has been fine and well in her self and this swollen mass has just randomly appeared in the last week.

  • Hey, as scary as it seems, Googling symptoms will just make your fear and anxieties worse, because google diagnosises always seem like the last option. But it's not.

I'm glad she's seeing doctors; and hey, to put your mind at ease, to me it just sounds like a cyst. I'm no doctor but a lump on the skin with no sign of infection could be a cyst, non invasive (not harmful). Could be a reaction to something, could even be from nicotine if she smokes. I had a lump like that, and it scared me into quitting smoking, and within months after it was gone.

please try keeping your mind at peace by knowing most lumps aren't invasive. And because it's so new, it's probably nothing harmful. But the fact she's getting checked soon after she noticed it is great! I wish the best for you both!! X

  • Thank you so much for your reply [@r1tuals]‍ . I really hope it's just a cyst or something similar. It's been driving me crazy, I don't like the whole waiting round and the unknown, I just worry about how she is feeling, it's so scary.

She has given up smoking in the last 5 or so years but she has an E cig pen, which has nicotine in so who knows, could be what you experienced.

    Thank you again xx

  • And your anxieties are perfectly valid. The unknown is scary, and so is waiting because it seems that waiting gives room for symptoms to worsen, but hey anxiety can imitate symptoms of anything also. Maybe suggest to her to go cold turkey and shut off the nicotine for a week to see if she feels better in general - if she does it was most likely nicotine.

    you're welcome, I hope I could help x
