Nervous

Hi I received my smear results today that show I have HPV positive and high-grade (moderate) dyskaryosis. I'm so nervous and scared I feel sick.
I just googled (I know I shouldn't) and it says it could be sexually transmitted. I have been married and with the same man for 6 years and had a normal smear after our son was born 3 years ago. But know I'm overthinking everything and I just need someone to reassure me ️

  • Hi,

HPV could be a sexually transmitted disease.....but doesn't mean it is !

You can have HPV lay dormant in your body for many years undetected.

I understand your worry, but I would personally research HPV fully.  Have sexual health check at sexual health clinic, ask your partner to do the same ( or risk passing from one to another)

And talk about your health concerns with your partner, as this affects you both x

Don't overthink your relationship at this stage... he may not even have HPV too, so best to be checked out.

Try not to overthink, take action- book and both get checked out and go from there.

When you have diagnoses of HPV you have a greater understanding of it and can get any Gynological concerns checked xx

All the best to you and your partner xx

  • Hi,

Thank you for replying. I had a sexual health check and so has my husband. And everything came back normal. I have looked into HPV. I'm just worried

  • Hi

The HPV virus which can cause cervical cell changes is transmitted by skin to skin genital contact, but it can lay dormant in your body for a considerable time. There is no way to tell when or from whom you got the virus, but it’s extremely common in the sexually active population and doesn’t mean that anyone has been promiscuous or that a partner has been unfaithful. You will test negative for HPV if the virus is dormant, and there is no test for men.

As your test has identified cervical cell changes, you will be referred for a colposcopy. This is where your cervix will be closely examined and a vinegar solution applied to identify any areas of abnormal cells. Then a decision will be made on treatment, but rest assured that treatment for abnormal cells is quick and normally very successful. If you need any more info, please just ask..google is often a confusing and scary place to look for information and not all of it is correct.
