I have just returned home after my colonoscopy. After reading up on the procedure I decided against sedation so drove myself to hospital. They seemed surprised I didn't want sedation and warned it could be uncomfortable as I have had a C section and there could be adhesions. The staff were amazing, chatty and friendly and I don't think I really needed the gas and air. It felt a little uncomfortable at times but I wouldn't say painful and was really pleased I had said no to sedation. I would reccomend getting a friend to drive as you have a canula fitted just in case you need more pain relief or any treatment, my bowel looked quite healthy but I guess it could be more painful if there were leisions. A very positive experience and glad I was awake to watch it, it was facinating! The prep was the worst thing about it, I took my first dose of Moviprep at 7pm and thought it hadn't worked as it was 12.30 am before any movement, I had cramps the night before but the next morning it was fine and all tolerable. Make sure you chill your Moviprep as it is slightly more palatable (I didn't chill on day one and it definitely made a difference). I think if you can relax through it you will be fine and if you follow the prep correctly you shouldn't have any accidents.
