Neck lump and waiting for biopsy

Hi all, just wondering if anybody else has been through this and what the outcome was....so I found a lump on the left side of my neck in April, suddenly just appeared from nowhere but I was feeling really run down and stressed plus I kept feeling cold. I spoke with GP and she put me on an antibiotic which did nothing, I then made an appointment to see her and as soon as she felt the lump she sent me for urgent bloods and an urgent ultrasound. Bloods came back fine but there is a small cystic nodule on right thyroid and on left side the lump is a solid nodule with cystic area measuring 2.5 by 3.4 cm it has been classed as a U3 and advised to see ENT. I saw ENT and he put a camera up my nose and down my throat but didn't see anything, he said he doesn't think it is anything sinister and most likely benign but wants a biopsy, I am hoarse, I have a sore throat I'm tired and I keep getting pain in my ear and the back of my head. If it's not a malignant lump then what could it be? I'm getting myself worked up, I already suffer with an autoimmune disorder and stress can make it worse so I am trying not to stress. I'm waiting now for appointment for biopsy. Be great to know if anybody else has gone through this snd if so what was the outcome good or bad. Thanks

  • Thyroid nodules are common. I'm not sure what causes most of them but the vast majority are not cancer. I think over 90% are benign.

I also don't think symptoms make much difference. Thyroid cancer is often asymptomatic anyway.

I have had thyroid cancer and honestly, even in the worst case scenario, if it is thyroid cancer, the odds aren't that bad anyway. The most common form of thyroid cancer has a near 100% survival rate, particularly in under 50s and things like chemotherapy are rarely used. It's mostly just a matter of removing the thyroid. The stress is the worst part really.

But the odds are it's completely benign and harmless. A very high proportion of people apparently have thyroid nodules. I think it may be more than 50% of older age groups.

  • Hi,

I'm.in a similar situation though thyroid nodule was found randomly on an mri scan . I had a ultrasound which showed as U3 indeterminate and my biopsy has come back today as showing abnormal cells , THY3F so looks a bit suspicious but not showing cancer as such.  Consultant recommends removing left side of thyroid so he can see exactly what the lump is . From what I have researched and discussion with consultant,  thyroid nodules are rarely cancer and if they are its very treatable,  generally just removal of part or all thyroid.  Do you know when your biopsy is? Hopefully you will get a benign result . Rather frustrating that my results are inconclusive and surgery is the only way to know for sure .

  • Hi,

Mine is very similar story to yours, felt like golf ball sized lump appeared overnight, I'm a bit wheezy at night and my neck is sore, from collar bone to ear. Blood tests came back showing no thyroid issues.

My pathway identical to yours, but my lump, Thora as I've called her, is actually 6 lumps with biggest the same size as yours but solid. I'm having FNA biopsy tomorrow. I know it's likely to be benign but ultrasonography told me mine is substernal so could end up compressing trachea so will prob need to come out either way.

Frustratingly follow up appointment with ENT consultant isn't for another 5 weeks which seems a long time with uncertainty but like others say on this forum, most lumps are benign and even if malignant most are very slow growing so actually no rush. Just feels like all this waiting is creating me lots of needless anxiety!
