Pre cancerous cells in breast results

A couple of weeks ago, my mum was diagnosed with pre cancerous cells in the breast. We were obviously relieved as it was not cancer. She had it operated on today and was told she has to go back in 3 weeks to get the results. I'm a bit confused by this, cause maybe naively, I thought she'd have the operation and that would be the end of it... now I'm wondering what are they testing for?? I thought it was pre cancerous cells and that was the end of it and now I'm worrying that it might be something more after all? Don't know if I'm worrying unnecessarily?

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has recently needed surgery for pre cancerous cells in her breast. It's understandable that this may have been a worrying time for you all.

It's routine that the area that has been removed will be sent away to be examined to make sure that there was nothing else lurking in that area and that the Consultant has removed all the precancerous cells. Hopefully, the results will show that they had clear margins and that there was nothing else of concern.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses I'm sure they would be happy to explain a little further and try and help put your mind at rest. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let us know how she gets on.

    Best wishes,
