Cancer Scare - Not being taken seriously due to my age

Hi!

Sorry in advance if this is quite long! Just for background I'm a 21 year old female, great grandmother had breast cancer at 70 (she beat it).

Three weeks ago I noticed what looked like a bug bite on my left breast and a slight swelling under my left armpit. At the time I couldn't make an appoitment with my doctor was they do COVID vaccinations Thursday-Saturday. On that Sunday night I noticed my nipple was inverted but once I squeezed it, it went back to normal. I got an appoiment two weeks ago today and was told it was an infection (swelling was in the muscle, not lymphs or glands) and given a course of antibiotics. By Saturday (finished the antibiotics monday) there was still no improvment in my armpit and it had began to hurt. As it was out of hours I spoke to a 111 clinician who also said it sounded like an infection and to wait another 48 and then go back to GP.

I went back to my GP last Tuesday who said that the antibiotics have worked (due to what the bug bite looks like) but the muscle seems like a strain (just coincidential to the bug bite) which could take 6-8 weeks to heal. During this three week period my nipple has now become pretty much constantly inverted (not fully, literally the middle part of my nipple, sides or nipple and areola isn't affected either) but it goes back to normal when hard, this was ignored at the doctors. On Thursday I noticied a swelling/lump in my breast, was told to go to A&E by my GP surgery as there were no appoitments. I was told there that the doctor couldn't feel the swelling/lump in my breast and reiterated what the GP said about the 6-8 week healing time for muscle strain.

Now over the few days I've noticed the same breast has gone dimply, not majorly or anywhere near the bug bite. I only really notice this when it's cold and when I sqeeze the skin together on the other breast I also have these dimples. They almost look like hair folicles which my friend confirmed as she's pretty sure she has had these marks before. I am a bit worried its peau d'orange though.

As you can imagine the armpit swelling, what looks like a bug bite, the inverted nipple, the swelling I can feel in my breast and now these dimples have all got be very concerned. I know I've been told by my GP, 111 clinician and a doctor that it's nothing but they all told me the same thing "You're only 21, if you were older we'd be more concerned". IBC is a lot more common in younger adults which they seem to have forgetten and because of my age I feel like I'm just being ushered off. I'm just looking for some general advice as to what to do or any shared/similar experience?

    Hi Concernedgirl,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear how you are feeling. It can be difficult to get taken seriously at a young age and sometimes you have to be very persistent. It does sound like good news that both your own GP and the 111 clinician weren't too concerned. Why not give yourself the recommended 6-8 weeks to heal? If you are still concerned after that, don't be afraid to return to your GP and ask for a referral to the breast clinic.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

Thanks for the reply. What worries me is that 6-8 weeks could be the difference between stages, treatment options etc., especially if it does turn out to be IBC which is super aggressive anyway.

The thing is too I won't be here in 6-8 weeks time. I finish university next week and I head back home but will be back and forth uni and home a lot over the summer to see family who live near university, take stuff back home etc.

Part of me wants to wait the 6-8 but I know I'm just going to worry to whole time, but if I phone the doctor tomorrow and get sent for a biopsy or to a breast clinic I won't be here for the appointment.

    Hi Concernedgirl,

It usually only takes up to 2 weeks to get an appointment at the breast clinic. If you are so worried about this, surely it would be worth waiting for an extra week before returning home?

    Kind regards,
