A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear how you feel following your breast clinic appointment today. If you are not told anything, please never be afraid to ask. Did you only have an ultrasound, or did you also have a biopsy?

You should certainly have been told whether or not they suspected anything untoward. Not all lumps are cancerous, especially in young people. Some people get benign cysts or fibrous changes. Your GP should get a report from the hospital shortly and they should be able to tell you what they found. It is not unusual to have swollen lymph nodes in response to a mild infection. These normally settle down after a time, but sometimes they remain permanently up.

Hi jolamine thanks for replying to my post, I only had an ultrasound in my armpit, I am going to ring my doctors hoping they be able to tell me more I just dont understand why at the hospital no one said anything not even ring your doctors and u will get your results

If you didn't have a biopsy, here's hoping that nothing untoward was found.However, whether this is the case or not, you should have been informed of their findings. Phone your consultant's secretary and ask what the outcome was and where you stand now.

If you only had an ultrasound it is likely that nothing abnormal was found, but someone should certainly have told you this. You could try phoning your consultant's secretary and explaining that nobody said anything after your ultrasound and you don't know where you lie. It could take a few weeks before your GP gets told the outcome, s the consultant may be a quicker route.

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to interrupt, I hope everything turned out okay? I'm currently going through the same worry, as today I was referred to the breast clinic. My GP found a lump in my right armpit and said that she cannot say if it's so sinister or not. I did have my COVID vaccine in the same arm a few days before, but she has referred me and now I'm very frightened. I've been referred lots because of my health anxiety, as I manage to find lots of things wrong with my body, but today was the first time that she was worried too. I'm very scared. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Frankie,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and the worry that this is causing you. Please take some solace from the fact that it would be unusual, although sadly not impossible, for you to be diagnosed with anything sinister at your age. Not all lumps are cancerous. It is more likely that you have a benign cyst or fibrous changes.

I must add that I am not a doctor and am speaking about what others have said on this forum over the years. It is also a fact that only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds still look good for you.

I know that it is difficult when you have a health anxiety and understand that your referral has made you feel scared. Just remember that 'it's not cancer until you're told that it is.'  Try to keep yourself busy to help the time to pass. You should be seen at the clinic within 2 weeks from referral.

Thank you so much, Jolamine. You helped me so much when I posted on here back in March (I was referred to the breast clinic then too). I think my biggest worry is that it does not seem like a lymph node, instead the Gp said it is a ridge/lump. This makes me convinced I have secondary breast cancer, or an undetected cancer that has gone into my lymph nodes. I'm really hoping that the fact I feel well in myself suggests that it's not something as sinister as secondary breast cancer. It's just painful at the moment because it's been proded so much and because of the vaccine.

Yes I remember, but that turned out well for you didn't it?

Take a deep breath and remind yourself that even if it is a lump, not all lumps are cancerous and this is more likely to be a cyst or thickening. Your breasts have also been examined only a few months ago, so there is less likelihood of finding anything untoward than if you hadn't already been examined. The main fact to hold on to is that 'it isn't cancer until you're told that it is.'

You are most unlikely to have secondary breast cancer when you didn't even have cancer in March of this year. Try not to keep feeling the area. We all do this, but, as you said, this does make your breasts sorer. We all tend to convince ourselves that we will have the worst possible outcome while we are waiting to be soon. Fortunately, very few get bad news.

I hope that your appointment comes through soon. Don't forget to keep us in the loop.

Hi Lawl,

Can I ask what age you are? Younger people can find it difficult to get referred to the breast clinic, as they are less likely to have anything sinister. Sadly, the benefits of youth can reduce your chances, but they don't totally preclude the possibility Sometimes you have to be assertive to get checked out properly. 

I am glad to hear that you got on a bit better with your second opinion. Carrying out blood tests is a good starting point and is perfectly normal. If anything untoward shows up in your bloods this might lead to the cause of your sweating issue and your GP could treat this. Failing that, it could indicate the need for further tests at the breast clinic. It normally takes 2 weeks from referral to get an appointment at the clinic, so you are as well to have your bloods done in the meantime. I agree that the waiting is awful. If you continue to feel as if you are going to pass out why not go to A & E? This would get you another opinion and maybe get you a little further forward.
