Student GP

Found a lump on the back of my neck 2 weeks ago, phoned GP Wednesday and was saw yesterday (Friday).

I saw a student doctor, she told me it's probably a swollen lymph node due to a viral infection after feeling the lump twice. At first she told me she wanted a second opinion from a qualified GP but then decided she couldn't wait as they were too busy and taking too long. She informed me that swollen lymph nodes don't normally happen where my lump is & changed her mind about the size due to not having a ruler.

I explained to her that recently I've had absolutely 0 appetite, I am constantly extremely tired, been having night sweats and my breathing hasn't been so great. She advised for me to take a few days off work and get plenty of fluids. No tests, no second opinion etc. Just told to keep an eye on it and I should be able to 'fiddle with it and move it around soon.' She even told me she was expecting me to go in with lymphoma.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I've left feeling worse and don't know if I'm just being paranoid, she just didn't come across very confident.

  • Hello calf19,

I'm sorry that this experience has made you feel this way. Unfortunately, we cannot help you get a diagnosis, only a doctor can diagnose you, but if you're unhappy with the way you are being looked after by your current doctor you may want to consider getting a second opinion you can find out more about this here.

I hope you find the reassurance you need,
