Raised CA 125

So I had bloods taken at my GP this week, get a text to say to call back to book another in 2-3 weeks... of course alarm bells start ringing so I ask why? Get told I had a slightly elevated CA 125 level and they needed another test and referred for a pelvic scan. Naturally I googled CA125 as had no clue and now am panicking. I spoke to my GP who said it was raised at 43 and that my inflammatory markers were normal.  She seemed to think I was panicking over nothing as only slightly raised but my late husband passed away from cancer so I have anxiety over anything that mentions the C word....

Am I panicking unnecessarily?????

  • Hi Alison.

I don't think you need to worry, though you are right to get it checked out.

I had a CA-125 of 47 and it was due to a simple cyst. CA-125 can be raised for all sorts of reasons unconnected with cancer.

If it helps, I understand that for stage 1 ovarian cancer (i.e. early stage), you might see levels around 125.

I'm not medically trained. There is good info on this website (CRUK) about CA-125 and you could post in 'Ask the nurses'.

  • Thank you SO much for taking the time to reply....  It does make me feel better. But losing my husband to cancer and a friend to Ovarian cancer I am naturally nervous.

  • Hello!

I know this an old thread sorry but did you ever get to the bottom of your elevated ca125? I'm peri menopausal too & my latest ca125 is 60! Waiting for the usual scan but same thing happened last year, my ca125 was 55 but all scans were clear.  It eventually dropped to just within normal range but now creeping back up again.

hope yours turned out to be ok!

  • Hey There,

My levels seemed to drop to normal but was sent for a scan which showed a thinkening of the lining of the womb so now waiting for a hysteroscopy which is in 10 days time. Should've been a lot quicker but with Covid it's taken a while to get the appointment.   I'm a bit stressed about ti all.

  • Thank you for replying, I really appreciate it.  Hope your appointment goes ok in 10 days time, it is such a worry but hopefully with your levels dropping down it will all be fine. I've been here before (only last year my levels were on the rise but scans were clear) I nearly fell off my chair to see they were up to 60 on latest blood test, the anxiety is awful so really feel for you - hope you get the all clear soon x
