hi. Im in my early 40s and went to my Gynaecologist for a few symptoms - suspecting they were due to cervical polyps which ive had in the past> i see my Dr privaelty and he is great, also a Gynae oncology surgeon for the NHS. so very experienced.
He sent me for an ultrasound which did find a polyp but also a cyst on my right ovary which he has since explained to me, has been classed by the radiologist as indeterminant - they can neither say if benign or malignant, He ran CA-125 blood test which came back as 'normal', under 10.
He has suggeted that I have my right overy removed as removing the cysy alone is too risky due to 30-40% of all ovarian cysys rupturing during surgery, and if it is cancerous, potentially spreading cancerous cells. He told me that he knew no more than i did and stressed that the cyst was classed as indeterminant however, still feels removing the ovary is the best intervention.
I seen him again to discuss and of course, as we all do, ive been reading up on the stats. It seems that ovary removal is the last resort and many people seem to have MRI's to further identify malignancies brfore this decision is taken. Has anyone else had a surgeon suggesting ovary removal based on indeterminant cyst at ultrasound and normal CA-125?
He explained that he is not a risk taker and feels even if there is a small risk of cancer, cyst removal alone is too risky. Im wodnering though - does he know someting i dont - has he identified something that increases his sucpicion of cancer? Would he have to tell me that if he had?
Im due to have surgery in 2 weeks. Im sturggling sleeping and eating and feel terribly anxious.
