Possible Ovarian Cancer - do I need an Ultrasound?

I had an MRI scan for a hip problem and it has shown up an adnexal mass, that is as much as I know because my GP has since been unable to actually find my scan report and tell me anything more, such as where it is, how big it is, is it solid/fluid etc?

I have had a CA125 test at my request and I am waiting for the results. The GP has referred me for an urgent ultrasound but surely an MRI scan is more detailed than an ultrasound? Should I be insisting on a referral to a gynacologist at this point rather than waiting for an ultrasound scan which I doubt will show this mass in greater detail than the MRI scan?

  • Hello Herladysheep,

Welcome to Cancer Chat! The wait for results is always such a stressful time but hopefully it won't be too long now before you find out what your CA125 results are. I think that if the GP referred you for an urgent ultrasound, it is a good idea to have it done anyway and the GP may have some good reasons to want you to have this test as well as the MRI. It could be that they can see things a bit differently through the ultrasound and it provides them with helpful information so do go to your scan if you can. However, if you want to be seen by a gynaecologist and are worried about having to wait for the ultrasound results before being referred, do talk to your GP about it now and see whether the fact that they have seen this mass on your MRI is enough for them to request a referral and for you to be seen by a specialist soon.

I hope that they also manage to tell you more soon about what was in that MRI report.

Keeping everything crossed for you that you get some clarity on all this soon and that it all turns out to be fine for you.

    Best wishes,
