(29/f) High-risk HPV and abnormal cell changes and worried

Hi guys,

So I have spent 28 years of my life being sexual inactive (conservative upbringing). I had my pap smear in 2018 and it was normal. I moved to the UK to do my master's and decided I want to try casual hook up, because I never had any before. So I had unprotected sex with this one guy last year. Call me naive but I guess I did not have enough sex-ed to be scared of STD. I didn't know HPV is so common here.

I just tested positive for high-risk HPV and there are already cell changes. Now I have bad thoughts that I will be one of those rare cases with aggressive cancer and die really quickly.

I think I need to bring my logic back into this. Does anyone has an experience of cervical cancer developing in just one year after the viral contraction (assuming you know who gave it to you?). Should I rush the colposcopy by going private or just wait for the appointment within the next 8 weeks, it's so long:( ?

EDIT: I just realised this is the wrong section. I'm not sure if the admin could move this to the 'pre-diagnosed' one. Sorry.

  • I'm sorry for the worry this is causing you Gael but I hope the information we have about cervical screening results and these HPV FAQs will help to put your mind at ease.

Many of our members have had similar results from their screenings so will know what you're going through at the moment and will hopefully be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

If you'd like to talk things through with our lovely team of cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope this helps and wish you all the best with your upcoming colposcopy.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
