Swelling on salivary gland - urgent referral

Hi

So I have had this mass under my skin near my ear for a few months now didn't really think about it until I realised it wasn't going away. So went to the doc over a month ago and got sent for an ultrasound a few weeks later and then 2 weeks after that my GP arranged a telephone call with the results.

Had the call on Tuesday he said there was a mass swelling on my salivary/parotid gland a few inches big and now I was being referred for an urgent 2 week scan and he booked me in for blood tests ASAP. Had the blood tests done on Thursday, got tested for kidneys, liver, diabetes and full blood count. I have my urgent scan at the ENT dept in the hospital this coming wednesday I am just really nervous as to what is going to happen and what they will find and will they tell me the same day what it is? I am also really nervous as I have to go alone as my husband is in the emergency services so has a shift that day he had to go to. Any advice would be most welcomed as my head is going to the worst possible outcome as I lost my dad to prostate cancer and my grandad to bowel cancer. Thank you in advance.

  • Hi LW1701,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of your worries and I can understand that all the uncertainty must be unsettling.

It's good to hear that things are moving quickly in terms of the appointments. It's probably unlikely that you'll get full results on the same day as your appointment, but you can of course discuss any concerns you have with the doctor that you see.

Try not to assume anything at this point and while waiting for the appointment it can help to keep yourself busy and distracted, to help keep your mind off things.

If you feel you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
