Advice for future breast clinic appointment

I saw my GP at the start of the week regarding a lump I have. She's referred it urgently and I've already received my letter with the appointment for breast clinic!

Last year I found a lump which they did an ultrasound on and said all was okay. Said lump is still very much there and larger. Hence the quick referral.

Will they do biopsies and if not can I ask/demand that they do them anyway.

Can they really tell when something is okay and something isn't just by looking on an ultrasound? With my mom they knew it was cancer but couldn't say, she still had to wait for biopsies results. But have they ever been wrong?

Is there anything else I should say or do? Questions to ask?

  • Hello Mommasaurus,

I just wanted to wish you the very best of luck for your breast clinic appointment. I hope it all goes well for you. Perhaps you could give our nurses a quick call before your appointment and talk things through with them? You can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and I am sure they will have some good advice for you to help you prepare for your appointment and they will be able to tell you more about the biopsy process and answer your questions about ultrasounds too.

There is in-depth information on what to expect from your breast clinic appointment in this booklet from Breast Cancer Care.  Further information on what to expect can also be found here

It could be a good idea to write down any questions you may have ahead of your appointment so that you don't forget. I will now let our other members who have been through this process before come and say hello and share their story with you. They may have some helpful tips for you based on their individual experiences. I hope you won't mind but I have added the words 'breast clinic' to your title to make it more specific. This will hopefully give greater visibility to your post and ensure that it is seen by others who may have relevant experience to share with you.

Best of luck for your appointment - I hope everything goes well!
