Fit test result

Hi

I have had a pain under my left ribs for about 3 months. About 4 weeks ok my right leg started to hurt so got in touch with the doctors. Had a phone consultation then wanted to see me person. By this point my leg was fine. Saw the nurse and as she described it it was positional pain under my ribs, only hurts in certain positions then it would go. She sent me for a ultrasound scan. There they told me I had gallstones but would send results to doctor.

Heard from doctors surgery receptionist who said the doctor wanted me to do a fit test( think name right) then they would speak to me. Done that then got a text on Wednesday night to say it had come back positive and they were going to give me a urgent referral (within 2weeks). 

I have not spoken to any health professional apart from the nurse who sent me for a scan. 
Basically I don't know what to do. Do I wait for the referral or get into touch with my doctors to ask about the results from the scan but if I do will it worry me more? What could they have seen on the scan to ask me to do the fit test.

    As the gallbladder is on the right side it might be that gallstones were an incidental finding on the ultrasound and not linked to your pain. Pancreas and stomach are on the left where you say your pain is and can be visualised on ultrasound. The transverse colon also sits below the ribs on the left so my guess would be that the pancreas and stomach were fine, the gallstones wouldn't account for left sided pain, so the doctor ordered a fit test to see if there was any problem in your colon (fit test looks for traces of blood which can be from piles, straining etc). If there was a problem there this may account for the pain, also the the colon can't easily be visualised using ultrasound. 
     

    Only a small proportion of positive fit tests show anything sinister so try not to worry as there are numerous reasons for pain that aren't cancer. Positive fit test and other risk factors such as age always warrant an urgent referral which in itself makes you panic but the number of urgent referrals that find cancer is ridiculously small. Try not to worry too much. Good luck.
