Need Advice Please

Hi All,

I am 40 years old have had regular smears all my life, was six months overdue and went last week, on examination the doctor found I had enlarged cervix and a growth, put me forward for urgent scan.. Still waiting but with covid I guess everything is on a go slow. I have had the brown discharge very painful periods, pelvic and back pain which seems to be catching my walk in my right hip, I have been suffering with constipation for a few months and I thought that that this as my problem I havd also a hernia and history of gastritis so I just thought the symptoms were all from that... Angry I did not go sooner.. I am in Ireland so even though my last smear was ok 3 years ago we did face the whole cervical smear scandel and I am worried was my last one read wrong.. The wait is terrible, my husband is in remission from cancer life could not possible be so cruel. I am wondering if anyone else had a presentation like mine good or bad outcomes please let me know.. I have a medical background which is a curse and I semi prepared for bad news, thank you for reading

  • Hello

So sorry to hear about your husband and your symptoms. I have not got exactly the same presentation as you but time scale wise the same. I am 34, all previous smears clear. Visited GP for an internal exam and swabs (basically a smear) after complaining of huge increase in discharge for a year or so and also find streaks of blood in it and blood when wiping after urinating. Pain in left hip and lower back like yourself. I saw the GP last Friday she took swabs and said she could see dis colouration in one part of cervix, bleeding and what she thought was an ulcer. She also mentioned something about the shape or size (I switched off) normally common when on the oral contraceptive but my husband had the snip, I have not taken anything for 6 years. She referred me for a colposcopy, the hospital rang me on Monday which scared me as they have called so fast. They wanted to see me on Wednesday just gone but I declined as due my period and wanted to wait so I am booked in for Wednesday next week. I have looked online but can't find a similar story.

I know different parts of the country will have different waiting times but to get a call the next working day alarmed me

  • Thank you so much for your reply, I sincerely hope all goes well for you on Monday, I tend to stay away from Google search of symptoms as it's extremely varied and not reliable but I have looked at sound sites such as cervical screening Ireland, I think these growth can the majority of the time benign but the doubt unfortunately is still there. I know when my husband was diagnosed he was initially misdiagnosed with crohns it wasn't until 3 months later when he was seriously struggling a biopsy was done which found the cancer. I am going keep positive as much as I can and please let me know how you go. Every 2 years I have an endoscopy to check my hernia as its in an awkward spot near my oesphagus by chance the consultant asked what way my bowels were I told him I was suffering from constipation and he said he would do colonoscopy that's this Monday too so I feel if that goes well I will relax a bit. My take away from all this is that don't ignore symptoms I'm sure like many I have been avoiding the doctors for the past year n half due to covid and self treating and diagnosing myself but in hindsight I wish I had gone sooner, take care best of luck

  • Yes the same here please let me know when you get your appt through and how you get on. Mine is on Wednesday next week
