Histology Second Opinion?

Hello.

I found a large lump in my left thigh in August 2020. The doctors told me to keep an eye on it for a few week, after which they did an ultrasound and MRI scan of my leg. In November 2020 I was told that the scans did show a tumour but it did not look concerning but I was put on a urgent waiting list to have it removed. I was put on this list on the 21st November 2020 and was told it would take around 4 weeks for the operation.

Due to covid and my surgeon going out of the country for months, my actual surgery was on the 21st April 2021. After removing the tumour the surgeon was now concerned that it may be cancer.

I have waited over 3 weeks for the histology results, to be told today that it has been sent to a second hospital now to get a second opinion but they cannot tell me anything more than that or any sort of timeframe to get the results.

Why would they need to get a second opinion? Obviously I'm now thinking the worst.

  • Hi,

I can only comment on my experience of melanoma so I don't know if this also appertains to other cancers.

I know several people who had biopsies and the tissue ended up being sent to another (sometimes 2 other) hospitals for another opinion. This is because the cells don't look cancerous or benign. In these cases they always get a second opinion because they need to get it right. I know it doesn't help when waiting for the results but you need the results to be right.

I hope you aren't waiting too much longer & the results bring good news,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Good morning,

I finally got my results today after a long and stressful wait and I don't have cancer! Thank you for replying to me, I was in a very worried place when I asked for help on here and your response gave me a great sense of calm.

I wish you all the best and the best of luck to everybody who reads this in the future.

    Thank you

  • I am so pleased to hear that your results came back clear. Thank you for your kind words and I wish you well going forward xx
