Large breast lump found

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if someone would mind offering some advice?

I found a large breast lump this morning, it's hard, rigid, no movement at all and not painful. I've had and still have a couple of small cysts and they seem to have much more movement to them.

I was seen this morning by a nurse who told me it felt quite smooth and was likely nothing to worry about although I was under the impression you couldn't really confirm from feel alone. She said to wait a month until my next period is over and see if it's still there, if it is she will send me straight to the breast clinic. I can totally understand the rationale but at the same time I'm concerned and just wanted to know if others think I should push for further investigation straight away or not? A month is a long time to wait, especially if there is a chance it could be sinister. For the cysts a different doctor referred me straight away for a scan just to make sure despite the fact she was confident they were cysts.

I don't want to make something out of nothing but I am currently waiting for CT scan results for two lesions in my jaw bone, I get the results tomorrow (the consultant said to me in the first appointment he wasn't overly worried and in that case the follow up would be virtual and instead he has now requested a face to face follow up, I checked with his secretary and she said he definitely wants to see me in person), I'm extremely nervous about this already, so to find a breast lump today was just too much to bear.

Any advice would much much appreciated.

  • Hello shanootoo

I'm sorry to hear about the health problems that you've had recently. I hope that your appointment yesterday had a positive outcome and the Consultant was able to give you some reassuring news.

It's not uncommon for GP's to request for women to wait a short while before re-examining a breast lump although it's understandable that you're worried. Try to keep in mind that the majority of women who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm).

    Best wishes,
