Sore throat for months

Hi everyone,

I know no one on here is medically trained so I'm not looking for a diagnosis, but I have managed to scare myself silly with Dr Google so I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything like I am.

in Oct last year I had what I thought was laryngitis. Since then I have had a sore throat on and off (mostly on!)

I don't wake up with it, but as the day goes on it gets worse and some evenings it's really quite painful. It's more 'raw' than anything else. It doesn't hurt when swallowing, more when breathing - right down low.

Obviously Dr Google has me thinking cancer, however I am trying to be positive and perhaps post nasal drip would be more likely.

I spoke to a Dr who prescribed a steroid nasal spray - which didn't help, it actually made it worse because I was starting to develop a nasty cold. Anyway - the cold came and went and took my sore throat away! This was March time. And I didn't have it again until I went cycling last week and got really out of breath. This seems to have aggravated it again and it's been back to how it was. However when it rained the other day, it wasn't there?? So weird.

I also have scratchy eyes at the moment - which I imagine is hayfever. When it all started was around when we got my long haired cat, so perhaps an allergy? But I already had a short haired cat so who knows.

I am now keeping a diary so that I can go back to the Dr with some sort of timeline. I have also changed Dr's due to moving so will have to explain it all again.

I have seen a few posts on here that are similar and read a whole thread about people who are experiencing ongoing sore throats after having covid. I've not knowingly had covid but perhaps I did and this is what I'm left with?

Either way, I am terrified of being referred to ENT. I hate hospitals, I have health anxiety, I had an MRI once and freaked out - massive panic attack. I'm also very scared ref cancer - I'm 36F with two young children and I don't want to leave them without a Mum.

If you've read this far, thank you so much for paying attention to my ramblings. I know stress can cause a sore throat too so so am trying really hard to stay calm.

  • Hello Flick and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to read about your symptoms but it's good you're keeping a diary as it will make it easier to explain everything to your new doctor when you see them.

I hope you hear from some of our members soon but do feel free to join in on the discussions you've read as our community are very supportive and will do what they can to help.

Fingers crossed you can get some answers and peace of mind soon.

    Kind regards,
