Lumps on neck

Hi,

Has anyone ever had a child be referred for lump on their neck. Back story, he's had this lump a while I had it checked and was told it was nothing to worry about. Fast forward to now, the lump is bigger, and he has another behind ear on other side. Been to the doctors today, the one behind ear she said was a gland but said she was concerned about the one on his neck. She has reffered him for a scan.. Will they tell me results there and then?

I'm worried sick, my son is 4

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear about your son you must be very worried x

I'm 30 so not a child anymore (well so I'm told anyway) but have recently been referred as I also had a neck lump so thought I'd share my experience so far, although it may be different for children.... I saw my GP just over 2 weeks ago, she referred my to the urgent head/neck referral clinic, I got an appointment at the hospital within 5 days. I went to the appointment met a ENT doctor, he felt the lump and the sent me for an ultrasound scan, which was the room next door, I had the ultrasound scan, took about 5mins (completly painless, but I guess for a kid it might be a bit scary and difficult to lay still). The radiologist said that my lump had some 'red flags' and he wanted to do a needle biopsy, this was then done straight away, it was quite sore as they had to do it 3 times, but not too horrendous and no anaesthetic or anything needed, but for a child I would guess they might need to sedate him a little bit so they don't scare him and he relaxes/lays still. I then saw the ENT doctor again and he said he'd be in touch. A few days later he called with the results and treatment plan. I was really impressed with how efficient and quick everything has been! Hope that might give you some idea of what might happen for your son, although being only very young I'm guessing it'll be a bit more difficult for him.

Wish you and your son all the best x
