26 BRACA1 mutation. Further assessment needed after MRI scan

Hello there

my name is Laura and I'm 26 years old. My mum has had breast cancer twice. Once at 30 then at 48. After her second breast cancer she was tested for the BRACA1 mutation and it came back sayikg she has it. I was also tested and it came back saying I have the mutation too.

After this, I have had my first MRI scan with contrast. I was very nervous but got a letter saying they want to do a further assessment on Thursday. I am completely panicking about it. The breast care nurse did say it's due to my dense tissue because of my age and my family history but all I can think of is that it's bad news.

any advice?

thank you x

  • It's perfectly normal to go into panic mode. I am BRACA 1 and unfortunately didn't find this out till after I had ovarian cancer. Hopefully your further investigation is purely precautionary because of your family history. You are younger than the age of routine screening for BRACA, so most definitely youth is on your side. Think positive , you are stronger than you know. Xx

  • Oh no. I am so sorry to hear that. I really hope you're ok now.

thank you for your kind words. I needed to hear that.

    xx

  • Sorry I should have said , I'm very well thank you ,  my cancer was quite advanced stage 3c in 2017 after another relapse in 2018 I have been on a trial for PARP inhibitors and doing soooo well. Your in a scary place right now , I'm sure you feel tied up in knots, a very  good friend said too me "don't put your umbrella up till it rains" ! Very good advise , you can miss so much life worrying and it might prove to be unnecessary.... now breath. Xx
