Colonoscopy Today

I had my Colonoscopy today after being urgently referred ten days ago following an unexpected 'Abnormal' FIT test result.

To say I have been worried since my result is an understatement and I have been tearing myself apart over what the procedure entailed, whether it would hurt and should I have sedation.  I would like to reassure anyone facing a Colonoscopy that it is nowhere near as bad as you imagine it to be and I can't speak highly enough of the professionalism, care and dignity shown by the team at the hospital.

It is a very strange way to spend a Saturday afternoon but all of the team made me feel very relaxed and I only took a couple of shots of Entonox throughout the whole process.  It is not painful and only mildly uncomfortable at times, a strange warm feeling and certainly is less unpleasant than the bowel prep!

Thanks Alex and colleagues for making a very anxious patient feel at ease - the cup of tea (with milk!) afterwards and the Custard Cream was probably the nicest tasting refreshment ever!

I hope this reassures anyone due to have the procedure soon.

Paul.

  • Thank you for this!

ive been referred to a consultant and my appointment is urgent referral so I'm absolutely bricking it and feeling so scared about everything!

I really don't want sedation for a colonoscopy so this has really reassured me.

I hope you get the all clear

  • Thank you for posting. I've got mine on Tuesday 18th and as you can imagine I'm bricking it.read and re read the advise. Sedation, pain relief not sure. Keep changing my mind. The last time I had anything done in hospital was a C section 30 years ago.Of course you can't have anyone with you in the treatment centre, not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Been on the white diet and got the medication to start tomorrow. My appointment is 9am so very early start for me.

hope you both got good news from your results.

  • Hi!

I had a colonoscopy this morning. Just writing to echo Flying_Scared's comments.

It was over in no time, totally painless with just a few uncomfortable moments and the staff were great. The worse part was drinking the prep liquid the day before. I'd recommend having some lemonade, mints and chewing gum on hand to mask the flavour of the horrible liquid.

The procedure itself is a walk in the park overall though. I had sedation and other than feeling a little sleepy now, I'm not feeling any adverse affects. They gave me the option to just go with the Entonox but I wanted the sedation and I would choose the same again as it made the whole process super easy.

  • So pleased it went well for you and thank you for posting. Got my liquid tea to start at 8 going ng to put some orange juice and pretend it's a cocktail. Still not sure about sedation or just pain killer. Just be glad when it's over and get results.

    How your results were good

  • Mixing with orange juice is a good plan! Hope it's alright for you.

Even if you decided on the Entonox but then changed your mind half way through the procedure and wanted to have some of the sedation, I'm sure that would be allowed. I've had 4 colonsocopies at 2 different hospitals now and the staff have always been amazing so they'll definitely look after you.

My results were all good thanks! Just one small polyp removed this time.

  • Blimey 4. My husband has had two. Just taking it at the min not too bad the orange juice helps.

Good news on your results. I bet you were relieved. Hope you are celebrating tonight.

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

  • Hiya

Well  had my colonoscopy this morning. The medicine wasn't too bad as I added orange juice. I sent for sedation as my blood pressure went through the roof so was advised to settle myself it may be best. I thought with  the sedation you was put to sleep but it's not so was comfortable with that.
procedure wasn't too bad, strange to not to bad.

just got a couple of pockets of diverticulitis, and a very small polyp which they removed nut aren't concerned about.

just sleepy now. Thank you all for your advice and support. Hope all of your results are good and here to talk if you want to.

  • Glad to hear! Really pleased it all went well and that the news was good too.

  • Great news!

I'm waiting on my appointment to see the doctor before even getting a date for a colonoscopy and the wait seems like forever! glad you had good news I can only hope my symptoms aren't anything sinister

  • Hiya

i was first referred in January. The wait is hard you try to put it out of your mind but it's difficult. Stay strong  hope your appointment comes soon, and hope your results are good as well.

I was anxious and terrified but they put you at ease before during and after.

    best wishes
