Cervical smear

Hey everyone.

Im 28 years old and 6 weeks ago I went for my first smear test. I know I have been incredibly stupid not attending one sooner however i have now received my results back and they say HPV positive and high grade severe cell changes.
I am obviously extremely worried about this and over the last year I have noticed a lot more discharge than usual I've been putting it down to bacterial vaginitis which I've had before and Also I take the mini pill and on the odd days ive had spotting it usually happens in the morning when I wake up but this has also been happening during the last year, mini pill can cause irregular bleeding so I've always put it down to that. But now I'm thinking these symptoms will be cervical cancer and I can't stop worrying and thinking if I will be here to see my daughter growing up.

Is any going through anything similar? Or have any experience/advice. I'd be so greatful. I can't wait to receive the date for my colposcopy appt.

Thankyou xx

  • Hello, I Have Been Through This When I Was 25. My First Ever Smear Came Back The Same... Your Best Bet, And I Wish I'd Have Known About These Pages When I Was Going Through It Is To Go On To FB And Join The Colposcopy/Smear Pages. They'll Help You No End And You'll Hear Everyone Stories. My Colposcopy Showed CIN ll/lll (Biopsies). Had To Have Lletz Under General Anaesthetic. It's Taken 7 Years To Get Back To A Normal Result... And I'm Now 33, And Had My Smear 11 Days Ago And Was Told Yesterday I Was HPV Negative! So You Can Have Abnormal Smears And They Havent Turned Too Bad.

  • Aw Thankyou so much for responding

So glad you are now HPV negative and the LLETZ treatment worked for you.
I will 100% join those pages on fb. Just so worrying and I feel so silly for leaving it so long. All I keep thinking is if I have had these bad cells for years unknown by now it could be cancer.
I guess I can't change anything now and just have to wait and see what happens.
thanks for your advice. I truly appreciate it. X

  • Seriously I Know How You Feel And You Probably Are Thinking That It's Easy For Me To Say, But You Will Be Just Fine. The Cells Generally Take Years And Years To Develop Into Something Bad, Sometimes Between 10-20. You Really Will Feel A Whole Lot Better When You Go On The Pages, You Will See That Your Defo Defo Not Alone. Just See This As A Positive, That You Have Gone And Youre Doing Something About It. I'm On The Pages Too, So Say Hi, And I'll Message You On There If You Need Me Ever. I Had A Good Few Years Trying To Get Myself A Clean Smear.. To Be A Woman Ay Lol x

  • Hey girl! I had exactly the same last year, my first ever smear came back high grade moderate cell changes. They got me in for a coloscopy and said I needed the lletz procedure. They also send it off for biopsy. I got a letter couple of weeks later saying it had been sent to a meeting to discuss my further management. Well I had a full MELTDOWN. Thought I had cancer and they were discussing my treatment. Any how, I rang them as I couldn't wait and the lovely lady talked me through its completely normal to get that letter. They basically decide with other professionals where to let you go off their books or keep you on. I didn't have clear enough margins from the area they took away with the lletz so they then sent me another letter to say they weren't doing any further at this stage and to have a repeat smear in 6 months as my body may fight the rest basically. I just had this repeat smear a week ago so I am now waiting for my results. If it comes back positive I'll have to go back and have it done again I think! Fingers crossed I've been able to fight the rest of the cells virus naturally! You will be fine. What I have learnt is it WASNT cancer, it was cell changed that could possibly lead to cancer. Go ahead have the treatment and you will be fine!

  • Hi there.

Yes I had exactly the same. My symptoms were vaginal discharge ALL THE TIME, conyatly on meds for BV, but also have lower back pain pelvic pain and basically just always feel like there is something wrong with me lol!

My smear results came back as both high-risk HPV a severe dyskaryosis.

I went for a colposcopy where they gave me a lletz at the same appointment. I must confess, it was so painful but I suppose us women go through it cus we are the strong species lol. I have not yet received my results but they could take 3 weeks, and I'm only a few days in.

I am thinking the worst, but these forums help you to realise that soooo many ladies go through the same thing and it turns out to be ok.

I don't have any children so I couldn't imagine having to make decisions if I had.

Best of luck to u hunny. Keep us posted.
