Abnormal cell change and high risk HPV found

Hi everyone

This is my first post as I have just received a letter today to say that they have detected high risk HPV and also cell changes.  They have advised that I need a colonoscopy to investigate and will receive an appointment within 8 weeks, as you can imagine I am absolutely terrified, I am 42 and have three beautiful daughters and I just keep thinking about the worst, apologies for rambling but I have been googling all night and have just came across this site and thought it would be better to post here than continuing to read on google, thanks in advance for listening

  • Hi Annmarie,

Try not to worry too much, you are doing the right thing in following up and staying on top of your health. I've read that HPV is quite common these days so you are definitely not alone in this situation!

Let us know how you do.

  • Hey  I had exactly the same last year, my first ever smear came back high grade moderate cell changes. They got me in for a coloscopy and said I needed the lletz procedure. They also send it off for biopsy. I got a letter couple of weeks later saying it had been sent to a meeting to discuss my further management. Well I had a full MELTDOWN. Thought I had cancer and they were discussing my treatment. Any how, I rang them as I couldn't wait and the lovely lady talked me through its completely normal to get that letter. They basically decide with other professionals where to let you go off their books or keep you on. I didn't have clear enough margins from the area they took away with the lletz so they then sent me another letter to say they weren't doing any further at this stage and to have a repeat smear in 6 months as my body may fight the rest basically. I just had this repeat smear a week ago so I am now waiting for my results. If it comes back positive I'll have to go back and have it done again I think! Fingers crossed I've been able to fight the rest of the cells virus naturally! You will be fine. What I have learnt is it WASNT cancer, it was cell changed that could possibly lead to cancer. Go ahead have the treatment and you will be fine!

  • Hi I have read your posts can I ask do you still have hpv or has it gone.

  • Hi AJD,

It has been gone for several years as far as I know. My smears have all been normal since my treatment or abnormal with cells of of undetermined significance but never developed into anything. I'm not sure, but I don't think I'd be tested for it unless I had abmormal results a couple times in a row.. Hope you are well.
