Prostate diagnosis

My dad went to doctors for blood tests and a few days later the doctor called and said due to high psa tests he was being referrerd to urlogist. We went yesterday, the doctor called us in and sat us down... He said psa should be around 20 and it was 38. He then did an examination on him, said his prostrate was hard and it was cancer. He then told  him not to worry as with hormone treatment he would have 5 to 10 years left !

I asked him why did my dad feel tired all the time and have night sweats....explained this had started when he was diagnosed with diabetes type 2. He said he had no idea and we would get a letter in one to two weeks for a biopsy I asked could lump be benign but he said no its cancer. I didnt realise they could tell this with no biopsy. We were in and out in 5 mins. Felt very rushed :(

  • Helo smiler110,

I am not sure myself whether it is possible for a doctor to know before the biopsy is taken whether it is definitely prostate cancer but this is something you could - if you wish to do so - talk about with our cancer nurses. They will be able to explain the diagnostic process to you in detail so don't hesitate to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

It sounds like you didn't have a great experience during this appointment and that it all felt a bit rushed and you didn't get a proper answer to your questions. Perhaps you could give your GP a call and ask about your dad's tiredness and the night sweats? It would be good to get a second opinion on this or to get this addressed. Your GP might be able to tell you whether it is related to the Type 2 diabetes or if it could be something else.

I hope you get a bit of clarity on all this soon and I keep everything crossed that your dad's biopsy results turn out to be reassuring.

    Best wishes,
