MRI referral for headaches and nervous!

Hey, I wonder if anyone has any experience or support with this? I've had chronic tension headaches for years on one side of my head and have never worried too much about them (they're not painful, they just never go away) but in the last few weeks I've also felt a throbbing in my right eye and noticed that the headache is there first thing in the morning.

I called my doctor and she's referred me for an MRI, which has completely freaked me out. I don't have any of the obvious brain tumour symptoms -- no nausea, dizziness, forgetfulness or mood changes, but I just have this constant sense that something is sitting on or inside the right side of my head! Is it common to get an MRI referral and for it to turn out to be all clear? How can anyone stay sane in the weeks between getting a referral and getting results? (If it's relevant, I am a woman in my 30s.)

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with some ongoing health problems which recently have changed. It sounds as if your GP is being sensible in arranging for things to be checked out with an MRI although it's understandable that you're feeling nervous about this.

I think that most of our members here will know how this period of waiting for tests and results can be particularly difficult. Try to take things one day at a time and not look too far ahead as this will leave you feeling more anxious. We'd also suggest giving Dr. Google a very wide berth! As, again, this will leave you feeling more anxious and worried about things. Many people find that it can help to talk to someone and I wonder if you might find it helpful to have a chat with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they would be happy to talk things through with you and offer any advice and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for some answers and that things improve for you.

    Best wishes,
