The nurse is calling me back about my smear result

Hi all,

I'm 28, 2 children, 1 previous normal smear result. Recently I started having spotting after intercourse and pelvic pain. My doctor sent me for a smear and an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed all clear except loads of ovarian cysts which I already knew about.

Today I phoned up to see if they have my smear results back and the receptionist was at first very flippant and kind of rude, saying you'll get them in the post, etc. Then I heard her type something in on her computer. There was a pause, then she put me on hold. When she came back she said she's asked the nurse to phone me up to discuss my smear result. She was suddenly all nice and told me to look after myself.

I'm so scared, I'm shaking! I have a new partner since my last smear, so I'm hoping like mad that they've just detected HPV or something and that it's not more sinister. So many thoughts are going through my head - what if it's cancer? Am I going to need a hysterectomy? Etc.

I can't stand just waiting around for this phone call! My GP doesn't give timed telephone appointments so she could call any time between now and 6pm!

EDIT/UPDATE: Apparently the sample got lost so they need to redo the smear. She said that I need to wait 3 months for another one. Is it worth going private for it so it doesn't get lost again?

  • Hello scaredaftersmear93,

A warm welcome to our forum! Thank you for updating your post and sharing with us what happened. This certainly was unfortunate but I am glad that it was nothing to worry about though. I just wanted to reassure you that it is really rate that these samples get lost and that they need to redo the smear so it is highly unlikely that it will happen again when you have your smear done again. It's a shame though that they can't see you any earlier than 3 months given that it was lost but I doubt it will get lost again - it would be extremely unlucky!

    Best wishes,
