Cervix abnormalities.. what happens next?

Hello, I know there is a few posts about cervix abnormalities but I didn't want to jump on anyone else's post really especially when all I have is questions.

I had a telephone appointment with the dr last week basically because I thought my hormones are not on track. I keep having abnormal bleeding and bleed after sex, I've had this before and it hasnt been anything they could pinpoint but I cant ignore it when it started up again so I phoned wondering if I could have a blood test or something. He asked me to go in today to examine my cervix ect honestly I had no worries my smears are up to date I'm not due one till the end of this year and I just have symptoms I've had before.

My cervix has a visable abnormality on one side. Hes put me on the 2week thing (sorry my head is a little jumbled) and although he did mention other suggestions of what it could be I don't feel very confident right now.

Anyway the point of my post is, what happens? I know I've had an urgent referral to gynaecology at the hospital which has to be within 14days but what will they do? Would it be a biopsy or futher swobs or something else? I just need to feel prepared for what may happen so if anyone could respond with what theyve had or what may happen I would be extremely grateful.

  • Hello. I went today

They took a biopsy and now I've been booked for a urgent scan on Friday morning.

They were lovely with me, try not to worry. The wait in the waiting room was long, over an hour. Take some earphones so you can watch netflix or something on your phone. I got called in, sat down at the desk and got asked a few questions. General stuff like how many kids I've had, questions about periods ect

Then I was sent behind a screen and stripped my bottom half. Then I was asked to sit in a chair and put my legs over 2 rests. The chair went up and back a bit. It was alot more comfy than laying flat on a hard surface like when you have a smear done. There were 2 ladies with me. One doing the biopsy and the other passing her things and reasuring me.

Then I went back behind the screen to get dressed. There were tissues and pads to use. Take your own pad incase your hospital is different.

I'm getting cramping now, ive had ibroprofen. and Im bleeding a bit. I was told not to have sex. Not that I feel like it anyway!! Haha! And to have a shower instead of a bath. Not sure how long for. Till the bleeding stops maybe, I didn't ask.

I hope this helps. And obviously this is just my experience. It might be different for you Good, ive seen on some posts that they don't always do a biopsy. Sometimes they are just happy with what they see on examination. Good luck for your appointment xx

  • Hi Sezra

My gynecologist told me I would have to have a biopsy after having suspected cervical cancer symptoms. As I have a low pain threshold and and won't have anything invasive due to personal past experiences, I asked if there was an alternative. She said no, I must have a biopsy. I specifically asked if I could have an MRI scan or CT scan instead, but she said no again. As it seemed I had no choice, I reluctantly asked if I could have a general anaesthetic so at least I would be unaware of what was going on. She said I could, so I did.

I have my diagnosis now, but unbelievably she said she needs more information and I have to have an  MRI, CTPET and normal CT scans! I have the results of my MRI now, which is the reason I have my diagnosis. I'm having my CT and CTPET scan soon. I'm really annoyed that she wouldn't let me have the scans in the first place. When I asked her why, she said I would have also have had to have a biopsy as well at some point so wanted to get that done first.

After the minor biopsy op. I felt a bit sore,  having a wee stung a bit the first couple of times and I had period type pain with some bleeding for a few days.

Wishing you all the best. xx

  • Hi Kaitlyn,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Finding the wait very difficult so getting as prepared as possible for even the simplest of things around what they will do ect really does help!

Thank you so much for the tip on taking pads aswell that's really helpful to know I really wouldnt of thought of it.

Got my appointment for tomorrow morning glad it's not a longer wait my head is jumbled.

Hope tomorrow goes well for us both!

  • Hi Sezra

Kaitlyn’s experience was exactly like mine, including lovely nurses! I didn’t know they would take a biopsy there and then, and I had a lot of bleeding. Unfortunately I hadn’t taken any pads with me, but they found one for me and gave me a pad to cover the car seat in case of leaks on the way home. They didn’t seem to have a supply of pads as standard so it’s good advice from Kaitlyn to bring your own just in case. Hopefully you may not need it. Best of luck for your appointment-I hope all goes smoothly for you. x

  • Hello FuzzyAnne,

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm sorry you had to go threw that I'd of thought they would be understanding and able to do your scans first. I have PTSD so regularly have to tell people at appointments I do so they can be aware and make reasonable adjustments when possible so I can understand your upset and frustration, especially at such a difficult appointment for everyone and it can be made worse due to past experiences.

    I hope you are ok!

Thank you so much for the information on the wee after I suffer with kidney problems and would presume I needed my kidney medication but I know now that it could be the biopsy so that is very helpful to know.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I have my appointment booked for tomorrow morning now I just want it over with so I can have some answers quickly.

  • Hello Minska

Thank you so much for your reply. I find it very helpful to know what to expect especially when I can't really prepare for the results knowing the other stuff helps massively.

Thank you for the information about the car seat. My bleeding in general varies from very heavy to light and obviously I dont know how much blood to expect if they do a biopsy, I will be attending an appointment in my mums car which is currently a garage substitute while hers is in for repair. That is not a seat I want to stain hehe so thank you I will make sure I take things with me.

My appointment is in the morning so luckily not too much longer going stir crazy waiting.

    Hope you are well

  • Hi. All

I'm glad I could help. I bled alot after the biopsy. I was getting very worried about it as she couldn't make it stop. But it'd quite normaly apparently. I suffered a hemorrhage after having my youngest and I have suffered flash backs and distress every month with my period, its been better the last few years thankfully. But the biopsy did scare me quite alot. Surprisingly I've not bled much since. I wasn't given any info about what I can and can't do, apart from no baths and no sex. But i have felt the need to take things slowly the last few days

Have you got any pain or anything? I had terrible back and lower tummy pains on the the day of the biopsy, it could have been nerves. But since I had the procedure I've felt complety fine. No pain at all, apart from a bit of cramping for the first night. I have been suffering with diarrhea in the morning. Again, could be nerves. I've not been eating properly due to the stress of it all.

I had a blood test today, and I've spent the rest of the day with my feet up watching TV with the kids. They are both off school for various reasons.

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow sezra. I hope your not waiting too long. My scan is at 10am, I dont know what kind of scan it will be. I've read a bit about it might being an internal  scan? I really hope not!

Minska, I hope your diagnosis was possititive.

    Love to you all

  • The nurse suggested one of those incontinence pads for the car seat...slim but covered the seat. I was glad of it! Not everyone has a lot of bleeding..I think I was just unlucky with that.

  • Oh one other thing. You probably know this. But I didn't. No one told me, I read it on here somewhere. When it was too late!

Ibroprofen isn't good if your having a procedure that causes bleeding. So take paracetamol for the pain. I had no idea about this and I took 2 before going to the hospital, 2 when I got home, and 2 before bed! Haha.

  • Hi Kaitlyn

I’m surprised you haven’t been told the type of scan you’re getting. I’ve never had an internal scan so have no experience of them but good luck for tomorrow with it and hope it goes ok for you, whatever it is.

As I had cervical cancer, the standard scans are mri and CT for that. x
