Mole Removal Awaiting Results

I had a new mole show up on my back when I was pregnant 3 years ago, I foolishly believed that this was totally normal and didn't think anything of it at all.
I recently began watching a doctors programme and melanoma was mentioned. So I booked in to get it checked. The GP wasn't concerned but sent photos over to dermatology anyways. I was called in a few days later and they took one look at it, and I recall the words 'active lesion, globular pattern and different colours' being used. It was then removed. The dermatologist doing the procedure told me that he thinks it was 'borderline' I haven't a clue what this means but he followed it up with he doesn't think it is advanced. Does this mean he believes it could infact be melanoma just from looking at it?
I have two sons under 3 years old, one of who is autistic and I'm really struggling with the unknown. There is so much of it surrounding my family, and they really need me. I just can't get out of this negative headspace now. I mean I left the thing for 3 years before getting it checked it. Does that dramatically decrease my chances of survival if it is melanoma? Sorry for ranting and thank you for your time and patience xxx

  • Hi Kay,

I think, from what the consultant said, that borderline means there is a chance it was pre-cancerous and caught before the cells became malignant. In this case it's been caught in time and won't cause you any further problems. If it is melanoma, it's still not a given that a 3 year wait has made it worse. Some melanomas grow very slowly or even stop growing before they get deep enough to spread. If it spread in that 3 year period you would have had worrying symptoms by now. So try not to dwell on a worse case scenario. Keep busy to distract yourself while waiting for the results. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Angie,

thank you so much for your super speedy and very reassuring response. I really needed to hear some level headed, calming words and you've provided me with that. I did think if this was the case and the melanoma had spread I would have symptoms by now. I spotted the mole during my first pregnancy and all my blood work was absolutely perfect I then went on to have a second child who's now 17 months and once again everything throughout pregnancy was totally normal and I would of thought it this was not the case something would of showed up on my bloods. So hopefully it's been caught in time, I'm terrified for them to tell me it has progressed. If it is infact melanoma!

  • Hope you don't mind me commenting but I'm in a very similar situation as yourself had a new mole appear and put it off but then checking back through old photos it definitely wasn't there before. My GP took one look at it and reffered me straight to the dermatologist. Had my appointment yesterday and the dermatgist removed it there and then. I have a 6 year old and a 19 month old and until yesterday just thought I was being a bit paranoid I didn't actually think it would be anything serious. Have up to a 6 week wait now for the results it's going to be torture. Sending lots of hugs to you x

  • I'm so sorry your going through a similar thing. I really isn't nice at all. If you ever want to talk please feel free to send me a message. Good to have a team around you! Sending so much love your way x

  • I got my results today and can tell you it was a dysplasic nevus. Thrilled to be able to say that! What a worry two weeks it has been. Rebecca I hope you get the same result, sending lots of love x

  • Hi Kay,

That is so good to hear. xx
