Seeking advice before biopsy next week

Hi - I don't know if anyone will be able to help. Or really, what I'm seeking. But all words and advice very much appreciated so here goes:

I found a breast lump a couple of weeks back. Problem is, I'm not currently in the UK. I traveled to Sierra Leone for work before the pandemic. I was due to be here for 2 months and, given the situation since with covid back home and work opportunities here, I stayed.

I went to a private hospital for a mammogram on 23 Apr. They called me back for an ultrasound on 28 April. No official report from the Dr yet but there's definitely something there so he booked me in for a biopsy on Wednesday 5 May.

I don't know when those results will be out. Obviously I can't jump to conclusions but, whatever it is, I think something will need to be done - it's quite big and it aches. Not painful so much but it's making itself known.

So should I start planning my return now? I'm aware waiting times have possibly increased in the UK since covid. I'm also mindful that I will have to quarantine for 10 days (though can pay for an additinoal test for earlier release). I live alone and have few friends and no family close to where I live in the UK so also worried about that (another reason why I stayed here). Agh I just feel so helpless but also very conscious that I may need to act very quickly and wonder what, if anything, I should put in place now.

If anything, it kind of helps just to write it all out.

Thank you

  • Hello Aviendha

I'm sorry to hear that you're undergoing some tests for breast changes that you've recently noticed. it must be a worrying time for you particularly as you're abroad at the moment and so have many other things to take into consideration.

It's worth keeping in mind that the majority of women who attend a breast clinic in the UK would not go on to be diagnosed with cancer so try to stay positive at the moment. There could be many other problems that have been picked up on the mammogram and hopefully, the Dr will be able to give you some indication when you go for your biopsy this week.

I think most of our members here will understand the thought processes that happen when you're undergoing tests and investigations. Whilst it may perhaps be sensible to investigate the practicalities around returning to the UK if needs be, try not to jump too far ahead as it will cause you more anxiety

I hope that all goes smoothly later this week. Do let us know how you get on and we will try to give you any advice or support that we can.

    Best wishes,
