How much longer for an appointment with gynae?

After having increasingly painful and heavy periods over the last 12 months I went for an internal ultrasound at the end of March where they believe that they found a 6mm polyp in my uterus lining. I was told it wasn't anything to worry about but that I'd be referred to a gynaecologist to look at it further. It's been a month since then and I have not had any appointment through from the gynaecologist. I spoke to the hospital who have it on their system and they have told me that my gp has sent me for an "urgent" referral to them, but the appointment has not been triaged yet. When I heard the word urgent I immediately panicked and asked how urgent this was, and they explained it wasn't as urgent as a 2 week referral but it was urgent, and I could be waiting 4-6 weeks. What could this mean? If it is urgent surely I should be seen more quickly? The longer I wait the more i am worrying!

Any help/advice is really welcomed- TIA!

  • Hello ZdP09

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting for an appointment with the gynaecologist at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

Typically a 2 week urgent referral is for someone who has been referred on a suspected cancer pathway. It's worth remembering here that over 90% of people who are seen under this 2 week referral system are not diagnosed with cancer.

The fact that you've been told your referral doesn't fall into this category is reassuring but it's natural that you're still feeling concerned. Try to keep in mind that your recent ultrasound didn't raise anything of immediate concern so this is also reassuring.

If you'd like to have a chat with one of our nurses you're welcome to give them a call. They'll be back in the office after the Bank Holiday and are available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm).

I hope that you don't have to wait too long and that they are able to help resolve things for you quickly.

    Best wishes,
