Neck Lump biopsy - worried sick

Hi,

I've been reading these forums for months and find them really helpful so I thought I'd share my story and see if anyone had something similar and it came back fine.

I noticed a small moveable lump in the right side of my neck just under my jaw about a year ago. I thought it was just a swollen gland so left it. It never went away so I went to my doctor and he said it was nothing to worry about. In December last year I noticed it was still there so my gp referred me to the ENT. He sent me for an ultrasound and said he wasn't too worried about it. I had the ultrasound and was told I wouldn't need a biopsy as it looked fine.

fast forward to now and I still have the lump and have now found another one. I went back to the ENT and he has scheduled me in for an excision biopsy on the 10th May. I am worried sick and feel like it will be something bad. Has anyone had biopsies done like this and it has come back ok? I don't have many other symptoms apart from some tiredness but I never sleep well anyways and some headaches but he doesn't think they're related.

  • Hi!

I'm in a similar situation to you apart from I've just been referred for an ultrasound after finding a lump beneath my jaw. I understand how worried you must be as I'm really worried about my lump too. I can't offer you much advice regarding the biopsy but please try not to worry, I keep telling myself that even I had cancer it would likely be very treatable and I'd get through it (I'm 21 so guessing it would be Hodgkin's lymphoma). Please keep me updated on how your biopsy goes, I've got my fingers crossed for you x

  • Hey!

I just replied to your post too haha we're in this together. My surgery is the 10th May so I will let you know how I get on. When is your ultrasound? I'm 26 so feel the exact same as you and apparently lymphoma is very curable but I still can't help worrying. I had a lump in my breast last year too which turned out to be a cyst and I remember being so worried about that too.

I really don't think yours sound sinister at all and having no other symptoms is a great sign. Keep me posted and try not to worry too much

  • Yes please let me know! I don't have a date for my ultrasound yet but the doctor said it will be within two weeks. Is the surgery quite minor or will you have to stay in hospital? I hope you recover well!

We're both young and lymphoma is quite rare I believe so the odds are definitely in our favour :)

  • I got my ultrasound very quickly too so I'm sure you'll hear soon. The surgery is just a day procedure and it can usually be done with a local anaesthetic but he said it was deep so I'm better off going under general anaesthetic. He said it might leave a scar but I'd rather have the scar for some peace of mind.

  • Hi! Good luck with your surgery, I hope everything goes well! Let me know how it goes when you get a chance. I found out my ultrasound is on the 12th so I'll let you know how my scan goes too :)

  • Hey!

thanks so much, just home now and all went well. He said there were 4 lymhnodes he took and will biopsy them. He said he wasn't concerned and usually if it's something sinister he can tell by the look of it but obviously he can't be 100% sure and won't know what they are until he biopsies them. He said there weren't any red flags and he's not too concerned so that's calmed me down. I hope you get on well with the ultrasound! I'm sure you will and please let me know how it goes for you. I'll be thinking of you ️
