Absolutely agonising colonoscopy

I have just had my first ever colonoscapy and I pray I never need another one.

I opted for sedation, thinking it meant general anaesthetic.

I was given Fentanyl 75ug and Midazolam 2mg both administered intravenously.

I too was told that the procedure would be uncomfortable but not painful.

As soon as they started the procedure the pain began, It was so excruciating that I ended up begging for more pain meds, I was given an extra IV painkiller then entonox too.

At one point I ended up yelling in pain at the top of my voice, they stopped briefly then restarted, informing me that I had a loopy bowel. I can honestly say that I have never felt pain like it in my life even though I have broken ribs, fingers and even broke my upper jaw in a car accident.

I persevered for as long as I could as I really wanted the full procedure but eventually the endoscopist stopped the procedure saying that all the noise I was making was too destracting and that I was obviously in pain.......

I too was made to believe that I was an awkward patient and overreacting..

It's good to see that I am most certainly not and I think this must be the norm....... So why do they all lie in saying its nothing more than discomfort,(like trapped wind)?

On my report I saw that they found I had a tortuous colon (a colon with a lot of tight bends in it) and that the scope was retroflexed in the rectum...

Absolutely  traumatic experience.

  • IF... you ever have to have another one, ask if it is possible to have a thinner scope or better still to be asleep.

Hope they got answers to what you had it for in the first place.

  • Sounds horrendous! I'm having one on Monday and am absolutely dreading it. It is apparently more painful for females and we have longer colons! I can't believe that there aren't better testing methods in this day and age. There should be a less invasive way of assessing patients that isn't painful or uncomfortable. Hope you are feeling better soon x

  • I've had one before & in all fairness I found the first bend painful but then the sedation kicked in & I woke up after it finished. I have one tomorrow for a check up & im now taking the prep, dreading tomorrow

  • Hope it goes well for you tomorrow. I've heard the prep is highly unpleasant also.

  • Thank you,

I had a giant polyp a few years ago & they're just checking nothing has grown back. I hope yours goes well Monday. Sorry you had a bad experience Not over reacting. Some people react differently. Recently a dr tried to take a womb biopsy with anesthetic & I cried so much they had to stop.

  • I'm sorry to hear you had such an awful time. It's crazy how everyone is so different! Just for anyone else reading here... I had my first ever colonoscopy yesterday and it was fine. I am a female and the report came back with long twisted bowel. I was put in all different positions and pressure applied to my stomach at times as they couldn't reach the end of my colon as it went into spasm. That was the worst bit. I found it quite interesting watching the screen! I chose sedation, it seemed to work a little bit but I was fully awake and remember it all. I found it to be really bad period pain in my lower stomach and bad trapped wind pain in my upper left abdomen. They did say I must have a high pain threshold but I don't think I do! I know everyone is different and has different anatomy but I read so many horror stories before and was tempted to cancel my appointment, so please go ahead with it! If it's that bad you can stop it, but many people tolerate it really well. Like I said, we are all built differently but go in with an open mind! Hope you're feeling okay now though and manage to get the appropriate investigations done with minimal pain or discomfort

  • I know the feeling worst ever pain still suffering from pain 2 days later
