The long wait is killing me

I went to see my GP last Monday about a lump in my armpit, she said she was going to refer me to have it checked and I would be seen the next week. On the Friday I got a call from the hospital saying they couldn't see me until may 12th. I'm going out of my mind, I can't stop touching the lump, I'm really scared.

I was wondering if anyone else has a long wait for referral. Should I ring the GP back and ask if they can do blood tests? I don't know how I can do this for another 13 days I'm going out of my mind

  • Hi I hope u r OK. I went to doctor on Tuesday (27th April) over a lump in my breast that doesn't hurt but my whole armpit, arm and shoulder (now starting in my back an neck) hurts. They have said I will get a letter for an appointment through in 2 weeks but I'm like you, the wait is too long! X

    HI Jjp and Robbo,

You are both fortunate if you are being seen within the 2 week time frame. Some people have had to wait considerably longer due to the current pandemic. We have all been where you are now and know what a stressful time this is. Try to keep yourselves busy to help it to pass.

Remember that not all lumps are cancerous. Many are benign. In fact, only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are still pretty good for you both. Try to remind yourselves that it's not cancer until you're told that it's cancer. There are enough worries in this life without stressing unnecessarily.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you both get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
