Breast cancer referral

Hi guys, I'm new here but I feel like I've read every single post going, so thought I'd add my own post to try and get more direct advice/similar stories!

I found a lump in my right armpit about 5 weeks ago. At first I brushed it off as I've had these before and they've always gone away after a few days. This lump was initially painful however the pain stopped after a week so I assumed it had just gone as normal. I noticed a couple of weeks ago in the shower that the lump was still there and it had hardened.

I rang my GP who booked me in for a breast exam. I'll just point out I don't have any other symptoms bar from this hard painless immobile lump in my armpit. The GP checked me over and couldn't find anything in my breasts, however has put a referral through on the 2 week pathway for the breast clinic. He seems to think it was a lymph node that was causing the lump. I'm currently waiting for my appointment date. I am quite anxious because I've always had health anxiety, and I've found this is all I'm thinking about at the moment!

I just wanted to know if anyone had had anything similar? If so, what where your outcomes please?

Thanks so much! x

  • Hi Allanah,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about your worries. It really is impossible to tell what your outcome is likely to be until you have some tests done. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer when I found 2 small lumps in the same breast 10 and 11 years ago respectively. The first time I had a lumpectomy, but 6 months after this I discovered a larger lump in my other breast. The surgeon was pretty sure that this was another cancer, but it turned out to be benign when biopsied.

It is difficult to think of anything else when you are waiting to be seen and many of us find that our emotions are all over the place and we tend to think worst case scenario. Fortunately, things don't always turn out this way. Not all breast lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts or fibroadenoma. Also, only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis.

You do not say what age you are, but it is also a fact that the younger you are, the less likely you are to have a cancer diagnosis. Have you had your breast clinic appointment through yet?

I hope tha you don't have too long to wait before you are seen.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
