Bleeding after menopause, consultants gave different opinion

Hello everyone, I am 63 and have been post menopausal since I was 51. I am new on here but have been reading your posts and have found them very helpful. I do have a delima at the moment which I know I can't change but wondered if anyone had had the same experience, sorry it is long winded.

I started having a brown discharge 2 years ago which is constant but not heavy. My GP refered me to a consultant and i had all the tests that you all had, they found a small fibroid and all biopsys were fine. The consultant recommend I have a hysterectomy and a pelvic floor repair on my bladder as it needed a repair. I was all set and had my appointment for the op then it got cancelled because of covid 2020. I moved county's at the end of last year and my new doctor referred me to a new consultant at a different hospital and my notes were forwarded from my old consultant. I have had a consultation with the new consultant and a vaginal ultrasound, which I am waiting for the results. I am now being told I don't need a hysterectomy as it has not proplsed enough and she can do a pelvic floor repair if I want her to. She has also put me back on vaginal tablets (hrt) which I was on over two years ago and only stopped about 4 months ago to see if the discharge went away, it turned pink instead of brown. So I have gone back at least two years in treatment. I was lucky enough to talk to my previous consultant and all he said was some consultants are more conservative with the treatment and that I shouldn't have moved, I only moved as I was reassured that I could just swap hospitals, and I would have had to start the buying and selling all over again, very stressful.

So am I alone in thinking I should have the same diagnosis with the new consultant and be having the same operation, I was under the impression I could choose what hospital I have my operation at after diagnosis.

What are your thoughts on my situation?

  • Hello DaisyandCoco

I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing health problems that you've been dealing with and that a recent move has resulted in things being changed. It sounds as if it's caused you more anxiety.

I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to your question. Have you spoken to your new GP about your concerns? Hopefully, the ultrasound results that you're waiting on will bring some news that will help resolve things but in the meantime, if you're unhappy at the new hospital then it may be worth getting in touch with the local PALS department whose role is to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses, they're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

    Just an idea.

Could it be 'cervical erosion' causing the constant bleed?

I suppose they would have seen if was but I've heard of people with a similar symptom and it was cauterised to solve the problem.

  • Hello Jenn,

Thank you so much for replying to me, it's so nice to have someone that can give me some advice. I am still waiting for my results so will wait to see what they are then decide if I need to talk to my GP, see what he says then talk to my local pals if I need to. Once again thank you.

    Take care x

  • Hello, thank you for your reply. I have just phoned my doctors to see if my results have come in, but nothing yet, that's two weeks since my vaginal altrasound so I will try again next week.

I will bear your suggestion in mind.

    Take care x
