Genetic testing for BRCA2 gene. What happens at the appt?

My mum tested positive for the brca2 gene, and her oncologist strongly advised that I should go for testing. My gp has made my referral, but I have anxiety about what's happening next and time frames etc. Sadly my mum passed away before I got the chance to discuss this with her. My gp mentioned that I would be to have some councelling beforehand? What would that be for? How long does it take? If anyone could please share experiences or advise that would be great.

  • Hello Asmit88

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your Mum to cancer. It's obviously been a difficult time and it's understandable you may have some questions about your upcoming genetics referral.

We have some information on our blog here that may help to answer lots of the questions you have about the process but if you're still feeling anxious then I'd recommend giving our nurses a call who will be able to talk things through with you and offer you some reassurance. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
