Thickening of breast tissue

Hi, new to posting and just hoping to find people experiencing anything similar. I have been experiencing pain in my left breast for around month, originally thought I had pulled a muscle. I had a gp appointment this week, to ease my mind more than anything as I felt I was becoming increasingly health anxious. Anyway the gp said they could feel thickening of tissue and I have been referred to the breast clinic. My breast is sometimes painful to touch underneath but i partly think this is because I'm prodding some much!

I'm going a little out my mind to say the least! I have been on google and well in my head it's the absolute worse now. Any tips on managing the wait? Or anyone experienced anything similar?

thanks :)

  • Hello SeekingSupport and welcome to the forum.

Our members know how challenging this time can be so I'm sure you'll receive some support and advice from them soon but in the meantime, I hope these tips I've found will help you whilst you wait.

I'm not sure if you've had a breast clinic appointment before but if not, you can find out what to expect just here.

I hope this helps and all goes well when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello I just wondered if you had an update on your problem with breast thickening as I've got the same thing and I'm worried sick and thinking the worse ? Thanks

    H SeekingSupport,

You have done the right thing by getting this investigated, if only for your own peace of mind. There is no way that you can be sure that all is ok until you have some tests done at the breast clinic. Let me just reassure you that not all lumps are cancerous and that only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic gets a cancer diagnosis. It is also unusual for breast cancer to be accompanied by pain. Most tend to be painless.

We all tend to think the worst when we are waiting to be seen, but fortunately this seldom  happens. The best thing you can do at the moment is to keep yourself busy with any work or pastimes to help pass the time until your appointment. We always advise people to steer clear of Google at this stage, as this usually only increases your anxiety and serves no purpose.

Sometimes the breast changes around the time of our menstrual cycle - could this be the case with you?

I do hope that your appointment comes through soon and that nothing untoward is found.

I see that Dawn84x has replied to you. Both of you seem to have similar symptoms, so you might find it helpful to compare notes.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
