Smear test clear but cervical cancer symptoms

Hi everyone I'm hoping somebody can help me or give me some advice or reassurance. Basically this all started a month or so ago, I had my smear on 31st March which recently came back as negative for the HPV virus so therefore further testing didn't need to be done. But since then I have been bleeding pretty much non stop, with a day or 2 of not. So I went to see my gp and she said there was a mild erosion on my cervix but nothing to worry about but referred me to a gynaecologist which I'm still waiting for my appointment to come through which is agonising. Iv had blood tests last week which was the CA125 & for other things like anemia etc which I should get back soon. But I'm just so so worried, I have a transvaginal scan coming up in May but I'm just literally crying all the time incase they missed someon my smear. All I can think about is what if there were cells they missed, or what if the erosion is cancerous cells and she's missed them. Somebody please tell me I'm over reacting or not to worry because I have a beautiful little girl and I really hope I get a diagnosis soon

thanks for listening xx

  • Hi Nicola86,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be unsettling and this kind of uncertainty is never easy. However try not to get ahead of yourself or assume anything - the main thing is that you have further appointments and results that you're waiting on. These should give you the information you need, as well as an opportunity to talk things through with your doctor and the specialist.

In the meantime, while waiting for the results and the appointment, try to keep yourself busy with the aim of keeping your mind off things as much as possible.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Thankyou for your reply. Iv had my blood tests back and all came back clear, I'm getting a second opinion on the erosion on my cervix and thinking of going private for another smear because I have a gut feeling something has been missed on my previous one I feel such an idiot ringing the doctors all the time I dread ringing them coz I'm scared they won't help me x

  • Hi Nicola,

I had similar symptoms to you a few years ago and it turned out to be an ovarian cyst. I was on a heavy period for about 6 weeks, finally went to the doctor and got referred for an ultrasound. They could see the cyst on the ultrasound and told me there and then that it would need surgery as it was tennis ball sized.

Also CA125 being negative is a good sign.

There are lots of reasons as to why you might be bleeding. Equally there are other conditions/causes to consider other than cervical cancer. If I were you I would wait until I'd had the ultrasound to consider another smear because (in my experience) the sonographer will give you an idea if things look ok or if there are any changes that need to be looked at further.

It helped me to keep in the back of my mind that if there was any actual indication of anything sinister then you would have been on a two week referral.

  • Hi thanks for the reply. Yeah the waiting for the ultrasounds are horrendous my anxiety is through the roof. Dr google doesn't help either but I can't stop bloody googling!
anyway, new symptoms have occurred since I posted like sharp pains in lower pelvic area, Iv had some brown spotting too I thought maybe I had endometriosis but then I noticed  symptoms for endometrial cancer and now I'm bloody petrified it's that coz they're very similar! xx
