One swollen tonsil....so scared!

Hello All,

I've had problems with my throat bow for over a year. I've had a thyroid scan, a throat ultrasound, and various other tests.

I've been diagnosed with GERD and possible globus sensation.

Well today I've looked at my throat and my tonsil on the same side is really enlarged- I've prodded it but it makes me gag. It seems pretty sift when I've poked it.

I'm not after a diagnosis, I'll call my doctor tomorrow, but has anyone ever had similar and had a good outcome?

Thanks in advance

  • How have you been getting on?
I have had that lump/phlegm feeling in my throat since last October- it went away over Christmas and came back  in January. I've had it pretty much constantly ever since, although I've had some fairly good days where it has been barely there. Anyway, I went to the docs 2 months ago because of it and also because I thought I had a lump on my thyroid - my doctor was really nice and didn't seemed worried about my neck lump although she has booked me in for a scan (which I haven't received yet) - long after seeing the doc I noticed that one of my tonsils in bigger than the other (well, I can only actually see one) it's not red and looks soft, not in pain at all. My throat is red though, but again, not sore. I'm just sort of waiting for my scan - I know I should probably call the docs and tell her about my tonsil but what's the point at the minute when I still waiting for my first referral after 2 months? Also, my doc did ask if I suffered from glandular issues after she looked at my throat - so she may have seen the tonsil and redness I'm assuming - let me know what's happening with you

  • Hello,

Swelling is still there but I have had a thorough investigation with my GP and he doesn't seem concerned.

I was still nervous so called back and spoke to a nurse who was fantastic and said if I didn't have pain, drooling or swallowing issues then it's likely nothing serious but if I did develop any of those to go to A&E.

She's given me lansoprazole and wewill review every 4 weeks to see how I'm getting on as she thinks it might be my silent reflux again.

    I hope you're feeling ok?

  • Ok that all sounds fairly positive I guess - my doctor had given my omerprazole for reflux although at the time I doubted that was what it was because I have no other symptoms associated with acid reflux - I've been on them for almost 2 months with no change really, although bizarrely my Globus sensation virtually vanished in the first 2 days of taking them - so I'm wondering if they worked as a placebo and this is all in my head?? But then I do have a swollen tonsil so I guess not. The only positive I'm taking from this is that my symptoms haven't actually gotten any worse - they haven't progressed to a cough or painful throat or anything - I'm hoping this is a good sign considering how long we've been suffering.

  • Have you looked at silent reflux at all? I have no symptoms of acid reflux, but my body knows it's happening- it could be the same for you?

  • Yes I think that's what my doctor was on about. I mean, it could be but I'd of hope the tablets would have had some effect. I also don't know how this would effect my one swollen tonsil. I also have a small yellowish dot on my throat. I have to say though that I started taking B12 because of the omerprazole and I do generally feel pretty well in myself - certainly not as tired, i don't even get as many headaches as I used to so in one way it's hard imagining that there's anything seriously wrong but because the symptoms are so strange and if you type any single one of them in google, it doesn't look good. (I have completely stopped googling anything) hope you are ok
