Fibroids?

Hi everyone,

I've been reading everyone's posts and supportive comments which has given me the courage to join and seek support myself (I have anxiety and am also trying to be more 'upfront with my feelings).

I've been having irregular menses for a few months now and my blood tests and smear have all come back clear (the doc thought it could be peri-menopause; it runs in the family- no cancer/HPV phew!) I am 33 with no children and was starting to try for a baby. I've been finishing one period and then starting another a few days later- which has put that back now until we know what the cause is. I'm becoming very anaemic and my moods are all over the place, as you can imagine.

I have an ultrasound booked in for mid-May but, to be honest, I'm freaking out a bit. After reading some information on the NHS website I am assuming that the next logical explanation is fibroids. However, because I still want kids my options are more limited for treatment.

Can anyone who may be in a similar situation to me please give me some information on what to expect going forwards? I know you don't have a crystal ball, but I'm anxious to know about some 'real-life' examples for what could happen and recovery times, what else it could be- if not fibroids. I think the not knowing is driving me a bit batty, right now.

Apologies if you feel you have already answered this multiple times for other people. I am incredibly appreciative of any advice or information you can give me.

Kindest regards.

  • Hello Sun2868,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum.  I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to have this ultrasound.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Sun

I am 52 now with a 15 year old boy and 11 year old girl. When I was a very similar age to you I was diagnosed with fibroids. There were about 30 and the biggest was about 18cm. I had been bleeding heavily and felt the mass of them when i lay on my front in the bath once.

I was told my only option was a hysterectomy. At the end of the conversation he mentioned a trial of embolisation as treatment which I did.

Treatment easy, recovery good though did 'pass' a dead fibroid which was interesting!!

Met my now husband, told him I could not have kids (also have polycystic ovaries) and got pregnant by accident less than a year later!! Big oops but we are still together!!

As you can see, a diagnosis of fibroids is not the end of it I promise xxxxxx
