Firm lump and breast tenderness, worried

Hi, I'm 42 and I've been experiencing breast tenderness and what felt like a lump. The doctor has confirmed as much, stating that the lump feels firm and bigger than a 50p piece according to the circle she made with her fingers and it's in the lobules. The tenderness is elsewhere on the breast though. I've been sent on the 2 week pathway but to say I'm worried sick is an understatement.

To make matters worse, I am going through early menopause and taking HRT. I also recently had a smear test which came back HPV positive with low grade dyskaryosis, so my brain has put two and two together and come up with terminal.

Has anyone been in a similar position or had a similar lump? What was the outcome? My mind is racing x

  • Helo Scared78 and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you have a lot going on at the moment but hopefully I can help ease your mind about some of your worries and concerns.

It's always scary finding a breast lump as many of our members here have found out but as you'll see here, 9 out of 10 people who are urgently referred are not diagnosed with cancer. You can also find out what may happen at your appointment just here.

Cervical screening results do tend to cause a lot of worry and confusion when they come through but I hope this information will make them easier to understand. Again, many members of our community have had the same results so you're not alone and I'm sure you'll receive some support from them soon.

I hope all this information has helped but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,
