Smear test- HPV positive but no abnormal cells

Hi guys,

So I'm 24 and had my first smear test a couple of weeks ago. My test results came back today saying I was positive for HPV but had no signs of abnormal cells. They've asked me to go back for another smear in 12 months time but I just feel so worried!

The letter says I am at low risk of cervical cancer at the moment due to there not being any abnormal cells present but finding out I'm HPV positive has really scared me!

I've been with my partner for nearly 7 years and neither of us have been unfaithful so I'm unsure when I could've caught it. I have read that my immune system should hopefully fight it off but I'm worried it'll stay and if it does stay does that mean I will definitely get abnormal cells at some point and possibly cancer?

If anyone has any words of advice or experience with this, it would be massively appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hey

I'm 27 had my first cervical screening last year and they found I was hpv positive with abnormal cells.

Being hpv positive doesn't mean any of you have been unfaithful. It is caused by being sexually active. Some people don't know they have it.

I ended up having a colposcopy and a recall which is happening tomorrow.

I was in the same worried mind as you at first not being able to understand due to being so new to the screening. Try to stay positive and having someone to support and chat to you about your worries is a massive help x

In most cases hpv goes away on its own so fingers crossed a better result is what you'll have.

    Hope all goes well.

    Mel x
