Post Menopausal Bleed

I contacted doctor 5 weeks ago with problem of urgency to urinate many times pain in back and tummy. Put on antibiotics for urine infection.  Last week started to bleed/have a period after not having a period for 1 year also urinating problem continues.  Have spoken and seen doctor last week.  Was surprised I have to go on a 2 weeks cancer check.  Doctor did not actually tell me/discuss this with me just got a letter sent on my phone so was shocked/surprised at this action.  Anyway have been reasurred looking on here that post menopausal bleeds are common.  I have been told I will have a scan and a chat with a consultant I know I have fibroids is there anything else that may happen? I am 57

  • As you've mentioned, many of our members have experienced post menopausal bleeds so hopefully some of them will pick up on your post soon and let you know how their appointments went when they were referred.

It can be rather scary when the 2 week referral pops up but I hope it helps to know that 9 out of 10 people referred this way are not diagnosed with cancer. You can find out more just here.

If you'd like to get our cancer nurses thoughts on what else may happen, you're welcome to give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Wishing you all the best with your appointment and the results Polly.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

Do you think it could be a coincidence you got both around the same time?

A water infection and then the post menopausal bleed.

It's good you're on the 2 week wait.

Post menopausal bleeds are very common but have to be checked under the 2 weeks just in case it is something.

I had biopsies taken and camera to look around the womb under GA.

All turned out fine. Good luck hope you get sorted soon.

  • Thank you for your reply.  I may well ring the cancer nurses.

  • Thank you for your reply.  Probably not a coincidence as I suspected a urine infection at Easter and spoke to doctor who gave me antibiotics that time.  Symtoms of needing to go to the toilet often, pain, did not change so when I had a large blood loss out of the blue it made me contact the doctor again he did run a urine test and no infection has been found but symtoms remain. I was up 5 times last night going to the toilet so losing sleep feeling very tired.  No Appointments yet.

  • Im so glad yours turned out fine.  Can I ask if you had any other symtoms other than a post menopausal bleed.?

  • I had noticed just before, my hot flushes had stopped.

Then it was just like a normal period.

    And nothing since.
