Neck lump on daughter

Hi everyone,

New to the forum but just needed a place to air my worries -

My 3 year old daughter has 2 lumps on her neck just behind/below her ear, presumably the lymph nodes. We can't say exactly how long they've been that enlarged but took her to the GP as soon as we noticed. She has no other symptoms of illness. We're booked to see a private paediatrician for the follow up ultrasound and blood tests the GP recommended. I'm going out of my mind with worry when everything I look at has the words cancer or leukemia or neuroblastoma. I know kids get neck masses from general colds and viruses, but she isn't unwell and it's significantly enlarged.

Just wanted a place to vent, sorry - hoping for the best and that the worry is for nothing.

  • Hi mpx88,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear about your worries although I can understand this must be unsettling. We all need a vent from time to time and this forum is a good place to do that.

I would avoid looking things up / Googling things to do with this as this tends to only increase worry and the information can often be irrelevant. The waiting for answers is never easy but I hope your appointment comes soon.

In the meantime try as much as possible to keep your mind off it if you can - by keeping busy, finding distractions - although I know this can be easier said than done.

I hope you find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hey!
It's probably no help, but I have a 17 month old son who is going through the same at the moment and sometimes you just need a place to chat. Swollen lymph nodes behind his jaw/ear on the right side, another swollen lymph node in his right groin area and has been extremely fatigued and spikes random temperatures mostly at night time. Along with random nose bleeds and poor appetite, we have been worried.

We had blood work done and an ultrasound. The bloods came back abnormal, to show anaemia and that he had very high LDH levels. They didn't mention anything about his white blood count or anything though? The GP also told me not to google things as it can cause us Mumma's to worry. The ultrasound showed that his lymph nodes do look enlarged but have a normal structure so they aren't immediately worried, however, given his other symptoms, we are awaiting a follow up with the rapid paediatrics team.

Can I just ask if your blood work came back normal? It seems to be the one thing that's playing on my mind. Hoping your little one gets some answers soon!x

  • Thanks for your replies.

Pickle0208 - I'm still awaiting the bloodwork (appointment is on Wednesday) and the ultrasound I'm awaiting their call to book it in.

Glad to hear that the ultrasound showed a normal structure to lymph nodes for your son - the doctor I saw also told me not to Google to avoid worry, and also said that blood results on children can often show high results of LDH so to not be immediately alarmed if they come back high as he will be looking for specific markers.

I'll be sure to share what follow up appointments/results show. Despite trying to avoid Google I'm in a constant state of worry until we know more. x
