Ultrasound breast results - malignant?

Hi guys

I was referred to the one stop breast clinic and had my appointment today. I had an ultrasound and a different kind of mammogram (not sure exactly they said works more like a CT scan). They seemed concerned about what they found on the scan and did 3 biopsies. I should hear back in 10 days.

On the notes from the scan there was a rating from 1-5 and it was 5 for both, U5 and M5. When I've looked this up it comes back as saying this would be malignant.

I was wondering if this is usually the case or whether biopsy results can then differ? I assume the biopsy is more accurate than the scan?

I'm only 28, my family has a long history of breast and ovarian cancer but they all have the BRC1 gene which we don't think I have.

Sorry if this is a rambling message just got a shock when I read that the scan grading is considered malignant.

Thanks x

  • Hi Lcamx,

I'm sorry you've had a shock today, getting those appointments done is really scary. But you've done the MOST important bit and you went to get checked out.

As far as I know, appearance on scans is just one part of the story. You can't diagnose breast cancer from a scan alone, although it seems that your lump was suspicious enough to warrant a biopsy. A biopsy is the only definite way to determine if the lump is indeed malignant.

I was diagnosed in May last year at the age of 30, so I'm sorry to say that it does happen. But, if that is the case then you'll have found it early and done exactly the right thing getting it checked.

I hope the 10 days waiting goes quickly for you.

  • Hi Rosie

    Thanks for replying ️

It's comforting to have someone confirm that what the scan says isn't necessarily what it is. Its all just such a shock at our age!

I will just have to wait patiently for a week or so until I get the biopsy results!

    Thanks again
